What is intense pulsed light for dry eyes?

We see many dry eye patients throughout the year as it is one of the most common eye conditions we treat. Patients come in complaining of burning, itchiness, or redness in the eye, whether associated with computer use, hormonal changes, or a host of other factors. For years we have treated them with various drops or other methods. We are excited to announce that we are now carrying the latest from Lumenis, the M22 Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology for Dry Eyes. It is a unique Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT) and is FDA cleared for 20 different skin indications, including ocular rosacea treatment and other skin inflammatory conditions.

How does it work?

M22 IPL2 300×290The technology works to remove inflammation that is built up in the eye. Typically, there is dysfunction in the Meibomian gland. These are glands in the upper and lower eyelid. They become obstructed and the oil secreted doesn’t properly coat the eye, causing the tear film to evaporate quicker. This leads to dry eyes. There can also be inflammation in this area, causing ocular rosacea. The oils in the eyes become solid. Thus, the surface of the eye is not getting the proper oil needed.

The IPL heats the area around the skin, preventing any inflammation. The glands then start to become dislodged of their solid oil and the tear flow starts to go back to normal. The oils are now liquid and clear. This is a wonderful treatment for getting rid of the nuisance of dry eyes. With a few sessions of the IPL, you can start to feel pain-free.
